Wider is Always Better

An exhaust system that comes standard with most cars are designed for maximum noise reduction. This design unfortunately causes a high back pressure by constricting the outflow. This results in lower power production. People who want maximum performance from their cars always change exhaust systems to prevent this flow constriction. These alternative exhaust systems are designed for performance, which usually requires replacement of the exhaust manifold with exhaust headers that direct the air flow more efficiently. Often made from larger diameter tubing, the large volume for a given length of tubing in itself reduces the pressure. Also, a bigger diameter tubing allows a smoother flow since air friction with the sides of the pipes is reduced as speed of the moving air inside is reduced. The effect is similar to blowing air through a straw. Blowing through a fully opened straw is easy but constricting it by pressing slightly on the sides cause pressure to build up making it harder to blow through it.

Since these are specially designed and often requires a certain amount of exhaust system tuning, these are often expensive. However, the performance benefits of increased power often make the expense worthwhile. For more exhaust tips, please refer to related websites.
